Annan quits, urges more support for Syria peace
August 3, 2012

Kofi Annan has resigned as UN-Arab League envoy for Syria, complaining that his April peace plan had not received the support it deserved from major powers, and the conflict at the UN Security Council had prevented coordinated action to end the bloodshed.

As Syrian artillery lands five kilometers inside Lebanon and the north becomes a springboard for raids into Syria, Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah has called on the national dialogue committee to agree on a "liberation strategy." Now the question must surely be: Liberation from whom, exactly?

The Syrian conflict's new phase

It has become apparent that the areas held by Bashar al-Assad's forces are rapidly shrinking. So too are Assad's options. At this point, his limited manpower, coupled with Syria's sectarian geography, is dictating what the next phase of the country's conflict will look like. If the Lebanese war has taught us anything, this new phase is likely one of many more to come.
