(CNN) -- Mohamad Chatah, a former Lebanese finance minister and ambassador to the United States, died Friday when a car bomb struck his convoy in downtown Beirut, Lebanon's National News Agency reported. The blast killed six others and left 71 wounded, Lebanon's state news agency said. Cars were burned beyond recognition as a wall of flames and thick black smoke shot up from the blast site. Chatah's bodyguard, Mohammed Badr, was among those killed, the news agency said. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack Chatah's last tweet , posted about an hour before his death, talked about Hezbollah, the Lebanese-based Shiite militant group with which Chatah was at odds. "#Hezbollah is pressing hard to be granted similar powers in security & foreign policy matters that Syria exercised in Lebanon for 15 yrs," Chatah tweeted. That group decried the attack in a statement aired on Hezbollah TV, saying the it "only benefits the enemies of Lebanon."

تقدم الرئيس سعد الحريري “بالتعازي الى عائلة الشهيد محمد شطح”، لافتاً إلى أنه “اخ وصديق لي، وقد عشنا سنوات نعمل معاً، وكان انسانا معتدلا يحث الجميع دائما على ايجاد الحلول للمشاكل التي نواجهها”. وقال الرئيس الحريري في مداخلة هاتفية عبر تلفزيون “المستقبل”: “اتقدم بالتعزية الى زوجته واولاده، الذين كان يذكرهم دائما، ويذكر كم هو متعلق بهم، وخسارتهم اليوم لا تعوض. ولكن نحن كلنا سنقف الى جانبهم، ونحن واياهم عائلة واحدة، وما اصابهم اصابنا واصاب كل لبنان”. واكد ان “ما حصل اليوم جريمة كبيرة ليست كباقي الجرائم، لأن استهداف محمد شطح، الذي كان الرأس المحاور للاعتدال، وكان يحثنا دائما جميعاً سواء انا او الرئيس فؤاد السنيورة وكل كوادر “تيار المستقبل” على ايجاد وسائل الحوار لأننا كلنا نعيش تحت سقف واحد”. وشدد على ان “مسيرتنا معروفة، واتجاهنا معروف، والعمل الذي قام به الشهيد شطح لن يتوقف، كما ان مسيرة رفيق الحريري لن تتوقف. هم قتلونا وسيقتلونا، لكننا لن نتوقف وسنكمل المسيرة لأن ايماننا بلبنان ايمان كبير جداً”. أضاف الرئيس الحريري: من الصعب لأحد ان يوجد الأمل، وسمعت من ابن الشهيد انه لا يرى حلا
