Pressure on Assad as West plans Syria sanctions
July 12, 2012

Pressure mounted on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday as Western powers drew up a UN Security Council resolution that, if approved, would give Syria 10 days to end its offensive on cities or face non-military sanctions. Meanwhile in Baghdad, Assad's ambassador to Iraq joined a small but growing list of officials that have defected to the opposition.

Lebanese Salafism enjoyed a major resurgence since the beginning of the anti-regime Syrian uprising in 2011 and the May 2012 detention of anti-Assad Islamist activist Shadi al-Mawlawi, followed by the Lebanese security forces' killing of Sheikh Ahmed Abdel Wahed in Akkar later that month further mobilized the Salafists in North Lebanon.
